Art's Anticipation of Science's Key Paradigm Shifts
Tapping into the Zeitgeist, or "spirit of the age" - Leonard Shlain

How art and human expression has evolved over the past 20,000 years, and what were the fundamental fulcra.

How do we make sense of modern and post-modern art today? What does this point to for the future?!

FULCRUM 1 - Depth Perspective

Giotto's introduction of mathematical perspective around 1300

FULCRUM 4 - SpaceTime

In 1907-1912 Pablo Picasso and George Braque carried Cezanne's insight about the relationship between space and mass to its logical extreme, creating in the process a whole new way to represent visual reality. Cubism fractured the mass of objects into pieces. Cubist artists rearranged these cracked shards so that they appear out of the linear sequence of time against a background of fractured Euclidean space.

FULCRUM 5

1926, Niels Bohr formalized this notion in his theory of complementarity, which stated that light was not either a wave or a particle, but was both a wave and a particle

Further Reflections

The relationship between ethics morals and aesthetics:

  • It is generally accepted within anthropological research that ethics and Aesthetics are fundamentally connected. it has therefore come to my mind to try a thought experiment with regards ethics and religious traditions whereby could one Imagine a faith tradition without its artistic representations? when could even push this further to say what came first the art or the conventions of the faith tradition?
